She will compete against such formidable talent as Team Scotland’s Eve Muirhead, the 2010 World Silver Medalists, 2010 Scotties runners up, Kathy O’Rourke of PEI, whom Jones defeated in the Canadian final last year. Also vying to win the $12,000 first prize and making her return to competitive play, will be 2 time World Champion, Colleen Jones of Halifax, NS, as well as reigning World Senior Champion Colleen Pinkney of Truro, NS.

The 24-team event will feature all four Atlantic Provincial Champions, as well as the reigning Saskatchewan and Alberta provincial champs, Amber Holland and Valerie Sweeting.

Some of the other teams expecting to compete for top honours include former Sobeys Slam champion, Sherry Middaugh, USA entries Patti Lank and Erika Brown, and young competitors Rachel Homan of Ontario and Chelsea Carey of Manitoba.

Competition will be intense and it all begins on Thursday, November 11th, continuing through to Championship Sunday, November 14th at the John Brother MacDonald Stadium in New Glasgow.

For the first time this year, the Sobeys Slam weekend will also feature 8 of the top men’s teams in Atlantic Canada competing in the Atlantic Challenge. This elite, invitation only event will provide curling fans the unique opportunity to watch Atlantic Canada’s best men’s teams competing for a total purse of $10,000.

The Sobeys Slam is the only women’s World Curling Tour Grand Slam event in Eastern Canada and with a total purse of $52,000 is among the richest in the world.

E-mail Print PDF

The Nova Scotia Curling Association (NSCA) is pleased to congratulate former board member and 2010 Brier co-chair, Hugh Avery, on his recent election to the Canadian Curling Association's (CCA) board of governors.

"I am committed to helping the sport of curling reach its fullest potential and I am looking forward to the challenge over the next five years," said Avery. "From the very first time I walked into the Westville Curling Club in 1981, I knew I loved this game," he said.

Avery has a lengthy resume of curling administration experience. Getting involved as a junior curler in the early 80s, Hugh has balanced his time between playing on and off the ice in the Maritime curling clubs and board rooms.

In 2003, Hugh became president of the Halifax Curling Club where he served for two years and is still a member today. Hugh joined the NSCA in 2004 as Treasurer and then in 2006 moved to Director of Competitions for two years. As a player, Hugh has participated at the Tankard level in both Nova Scotia and PEI.

Avery’s five-year term is the result of a nomination put forward by the NSCA and subsequent election by the CCA's 14 member associations. Nova Scotia’s Georgina Granchelli, former president of the NSCA, is the only other NS representative on the 10-person board.
